room-0051

I finally found the time last weekend to repaint  and rearrange my bedroom. I had painted this room two years ago when we moved in and I did a horrible job. The previous owners *grrrrr* had painted the walls, ceiling and closet doors mint/key lime green. Anything was an improvement including a bad paint job.  I’ve really been thinking about painting my bedroom (or any room actually) black. But since my bedroom really only needed a second coat of the brown and I already had a full can of paint in the basement, that’s what it got and it looks great. The previous owners *grrrr* had used latex paint over oil, so there were large patches of paint peeling and chipping off the walls. So I had to scrape, and zinsser those areas before I painted. I also removed a super ugly emergency doorbell and the big long wire that was attached to it and stapled to the wall. I guess it was a panic button at one time. There’s such a good feeling that comes along with finishing a job and taking the extra time to do it right.

Originally I was planning on hanging two pieces of artwork above the headboard, but I quickly hung the IKEA photograph on Adam’s side of the bed and it looked good. Then I threw together a cheap knock-off of this photo on my side of the bed and I think I’ll leave it like this for a while. The white chair belonged to my grandmother (Mum), I had taken it when she was getting rid of furniture years ago, but it was brown with a needlepoint cushioned seat and I had nowhere for it so I gave it to my mom. She had painted it white and covered the seat, and when she saw my blog post she instantly brought me the chair, she’s sweet like that. Eventually I’ll recover the seat.

As manly as it's gonna get

With red,pink and yellow curtains, white bedding and accent pillows everywhere, I tried to make Adam’s side of the room a little more masculine. I don’t think I captured ‘manly’, but hey, there’s no pink.

Here’s some black wall inspiration;

Painted stairs

steps
The above photo was my inspiration, but I went with white as usual;
Stairs to office/garage/laundry room

Stairs to office/garage/laundry room

I am a huge fan of painted stairs, huge. I really love the colored stairs in the top photo. I’ve seen that image somewhere before, I think in a magazine but I can’t remember (I got that little one from Google images). When I had seen that photo originally it inspired me to paint my stairs which go from the main floor of my house down to the garage/laundry room/home office floor. Our house is a split level and we can’t seem to find the right name for that level. Anyways, the staircase was covered with ugly carpeting when we bought the house. Kelly had the best description for the carpet, she called it “Pâté Chinois” which in English means Shepherd’s Pie.  The carpet was glued to the wood stairs and risers. I managed to get it all off as well as all the nails and staples, I sanded off the glue and that was all the effort I could muster. A few months ago Adam (husband) was painting the floor of our storage room/gym white and I asked him to paint the stairs while the paint was out. It was an instant improvement at first. Now I literally vacuum dust bunnies every day from the stairs. They didn’t show up on the shepherd’s pie carpet. Since I’ve got to do something about this situation I’ve been looking for more inspiration but somehow I always seem to be  inspired by more white.

Ok, so when we started the reno project 1 year ago, I took a good look around the house to see what I could salvage and bring back to life.  Literally, the only thing that I kept were these 2 chairs from Gaby’s parents, I felt they had potential.  Unfortunately I didn’t take before shots, but a quick description: pink velvet with dark brown wood.  I bought some fabric and sent them to re-upholstered and with the help of some shiny black paint -they came back to life!  What do you think?  Pretty nice eh!!?
