I am taking a digital photography class and our assignment this week was to bring in photos taken by our favorite photographer. I think the above photo is the most beautiful photograph I have ever seen. Although one of Douglas Friedman’s specialties is architecture,  he is most famous for his photographs of interiors. His list of clients includes every favorite interior decor magazine past and present, beautiful catalogs and fashion magazines. I have chosen some of my favorites but you will find beautiful galleries at his website http://www.douglasfriedman.net

What is it about this house?

California coast

California coast

I saw these images about a year ago when this house was featured on Apartment Therapy and ever since then I find myself thinking about the layout of this house often. It belongs to Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’m not crazy about the floor,  but for some reason I just love this house. I can imagine how comfortable and fun it must be to hang out with friends and kids in this space. The coastline and weather is a super bonus.

See what I mean? I also love how this house is jam packed with art, sculptures and musical instruments. In the past every time I see a Ligne Roset Togo sofa I normally find it so ugly. But tucked away in that cozy  little room off of the kitchen I love it. I can just imagine someone sitting there playing a guitar while dinner is being prepared.

inspiration, I think this comes from domino mag (Mark Ruffalo's kids room)

It’s been three years and three months since we moved into this house and the boy’s bedrooms are still not done, they look like they were inspired by a no frills orphanage. Victoria’s room was done within weeks of moving in and she loves it (except for the paint color I forced her to choose…). So I am trying to find some inspiration online but can’t seem to come up with much.  I know that I want some framed vintage posters from Canadian Pacific, like this:

And I know the white Ikea beds and dressers are staying, but that’s all I know.  The boys have asked for their rooms to be painted red and blue, but commiting to a paint color so bold is way too difficult for me so we’ll have to see about that.  Here’s what the boy’s room’s look like now;

As you can see, the baseboards have been removed so that we could spray foam/insulate to stop the cold air from coming in. We  need to paint before we put up new baseboards (like we did downstairs!!!). Hopefully I will have some after shots soon.

Paul Costello

Paul Costello

Anyone who is a fan of Domino magazine, for sure will recognize the fantastic photography of Paul Costello.  Take the time to browse his site if you have a chance.  Everytime I look at it I find a new source of inspiration.  I could have posted a thousand of his pics, but instead picked out a few of my favorites.  I seriously think I need a class on photography now.

Frames; IKEA RIBBA the largest size, $29.99

Art; WINNERS dish cloths, 2 for $6.99

This was literally too easy, I saw the dishcloths at Winners and instantly thought about framing them in a large RIBBA frame. I thought they’d look good in the white frame, but when I got to IKEA and pulled them out of my purse and held them up,  the Black was much better. That was easy!!

Vintage Jack Shadbolt screenprinted posters

artottawa

I was in Ottawa for work last week and at the end of the day I stopped in at FoundDesignon Bank street. I was blown away by these beautiful screenprinted posters. It’s so difficult to tell by these photos, but they are big and bright and gorgeous. They have totally inspired me to paint and to create art that I enjoy. I find it really difficult to purchase art. Every time I look for artwork I run into two huge problems; I don’t like 99% of what I see, and it’s always way too expensive. (these gorgeous posters are for sale for just under $900 each) I’ve been looking at Winners and hoping to find a masterpiece for around $29…

A picture says a thousand words. This photo is from the home of Jennifer Ramos of madebygirl and it sums up exactly what I want my house to look like….where’s my magic wand?

Here’s the LOVE print in yellow. It’s available on her website in lots of different colors amongst many other beautiful things.

I painted another LOVE image (above)  a while back and I framed it in an IKEA frame. It’s a design by Alexander Girard that I copied and painted yellow. I’m thinking about putting Jennifer’s LOVE art beside Alexander’s LOVE heart.

I had seen the LOVE heart  in Anna’s bedroom at Door Sixteen where she had also created her version of the design and I LOVEd it.
